Bracing for Impact: How the Looming ILA Strike Could Cripple U.S. Ports and Global Supply Chains

ILA Strike Looming

The U.S. is rapidly approaching a critical deadline to prevent an ILA strike. With the possibility of this large-scale strike at East and Gulf Coast ports, negotiations between the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the U.S. Maritime Alliance (USMX) remain deadlocked. The ILA has taken a hard stance, refusing to return to the bargaining table until issues surrounding port automation are addressed. With an October 1 deadline fast approaching, the U.S. faces its most significant port labor disruption since 1977.*

The potential impact of this looming strike cannot be overstated. These East and Gulf Coast ports handle more than 56% of U.S. containerized imports and 68% of exports, covering a variety of industries ranging from automotive to pharmaceuticals. Key ports such as Houston, Charleston, and Baltimore could be paralyzed, with the Port of New Orleans handling 35% of U.S. agricultural exports alone. The disruption would cascade across supply chains, potentially leading to shortages, price increases, and long-term backlogs.

How the ILA Strike Could Increase Existing Shipping Challenges

With other global shipping challenges, including Red Sea disruptions and reduced Panama Canal capacity, companies face many shipping challenges. The Red Sea attacks and drought-related limitations at the Panama Canal have already strained international shipping lanes. An ILA strike would further exacerbate these issues, choking off critical global trade arteries.

As businesses brace for impact, many are front loading shipments or diverting cargo to West Coast ports, but such measures can only go so far. It’s estimated that every strike day could require up to five days to clear the resulting backlog*, meaning a one-week strike could delay operations well into mid-November. At the same time, a two-week stoppage might stretch the recovery period into 2025.
